Author: M.G. Leonard

Genre: mystery

Main Characters: Lucretia Cutter, Uncle Max, Humphrey Gamble, Pickering Risk, Virginia, Bertolt, Darkus, Dad (Darkus’s dad) and the beetles.

Recommended :Kids who love beetles will also love this book (kids who don’t may find it a bit bad at first, until they read the chapter “Battle of the beetles” ; it’ll really make them laugh.)

Rating: 5/5

Summary:
Darkus’s dad has disappeared in a vault and his mother has died. On top of the door that leads to that vault says, “The Cutter Coleoptera Collection”. He is going to his Uncle Max’s place for now. One ordinary day, he is walking back from his new school, when a huge beetle falls out of one of his neighbour’s (Humphrey Gamble and Pickering Risk) trouser.
It’s a rhinoceros beetle, it has a really sharp horn and – it seems to want to communicate. Darkus calls his new school friends for them to help him investigate. Darkus reckons it has roots in the reason why his dad has disappeared – and it does.

Why I liked this book:

I liked this book especially because it was a mystery book. I love mystery books. Also, M.G. Leonard sort of convinces you to become a beetle lover. For example, I rarely make Lego models with 4 or more pairs of wings. After reading this book, I tried to make an exact model of Baxter the Beetle. It was very arduous work, but I was assiduous and did it in the end. Overall, this book is exceedingly great!

Other books in the series:
Beetle Queen
Battle of the Beetles
The Beetle Collector’s Handbook.
