Summary:
Julian, Dick, Anne, George and Timmy the
dog make the Famous Five. In this book, they spend their holidays at Kirrin Bay.
Uncle Quentin and Aunt Fanny live there, with George. Uncle Quentin is a
scientist, and now he is working on a very important experiment. Unfortunately,
a scientist who is working with Uncle Quentin, Elbur Wright, has been warned by
the police that his daughter, Berta, may be kidnapped. He has promised the kidnappers
that he will give them all the secrets of their experiment to get Berta back.
Uncle Quentin is very angry now. Elbur thinks Berta needs to be protected, so
she comes to Aunt Fanny’s house. She is American and has an American accent.
She sleeps in the attic with Joanna. She also takes a dog called Sally with
her.
Then, Uncle Quentin gets a letter from Elbur, saying
that he had done some miscalculations and Uncle Quentin needed to come to him
NOW. So, the five and Berta were left to be cared by Joanna, the kind cook. Then
Joanna got a letter from Elbur, saying that Berta should be dressed up as a
boy. When they did, she looked exactly like a boy, with short hair, tie and jeans!
Unfortunately, one day, Timmy the dog was sent upstairs to protect Berta and, because
there wasn’t enough room for Sally the dog and Timmy, Sally was sent downstairs
to George’s room. Sally was terrified at being separated from Berta, so she ran
around like crazy in the room. George had enough of it and went to put Sally in
the kennel. The kidnappers were waiting there, and, because she looked a little
like Berta with Sally, she became kidnapped! In the morning, the others figure
out that George has been kidnapped. For extra safety, Berta is sent to Joanna’s
cousin. Then, Dick, Julian (with the help of Jo, their friend) and a helpful
note written by George when she was kidnapped which said “Gringo”, found out
the place where George was kidnapped. She was taken to a house, and Julian and
dick rescued her. They also locked the doors of the rooms which had the kidnappers
in them. They call the police, and everything is back to normal!
Why I liked this book:
I liked this book as Enid Blyton’s wording
is very good. When you read her books, you are always excited. This book is so
exciting that I sometimes read it way past my bedtime! Also, Enid Blyton can
create suspense. Suspense is key to adventure books. Suspense makes you want to
read adventure books. If there was no suspense in an adventure book, then it
would be boring!
This is the tenth book in the series. Overall,
this book is fantastic.
